Proceeds got to benefit Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). Raffle items include 4 tickets to a Nationals Game and a gift card to Signature Theater. Also for sale will be products made by SHOFCO’s Womens Empowerment Program (mainly jewelry).
Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) was started by Kennedy Odede in 2005. Odede was born and raised in the Kibera slums and, despite his incredibly difficult upbringing, he always believed in the power of his people. SHOFCO takes a holistic approach to solving urban poverty, working to build a vibrant, gender equitable community where all are able to realize their full potential.
At the center of SHOFCO is the Kibera School for Girls (KSG). KSG provides a world class education to the brightest and most vulnerable girls in Kibera. The school is linked to a variety of free community programs, including a clinic which serves 4,000 people per month, an economic empowerment program, and a water and sanitation program which includes the largest clean water tower in all of Kibera and multiple latrines located throughout the community.
Last year, SHOFCO served over 77,000 members of the Kibera community. Once the school reaches its capacity, KSG itself will educate 400 students per year. In September of 2014, SHOFCO opened up their second location in Mathare, the second largest slum in Kenya. In addition to the Mathare School for Girls (MSG), SHOFCO brought all of their community programs with them. By linking a school for girls to community services to all, a girl’s school becomes the portal to larger social change.
