UFC 278 is set to get going this weekend from the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, August 20. There is a five-bout main card highlighted by Kamaru Usman and #2 Leon Edwards welterweight title clash. The event will air across the ESPN network, with the main card broadcast via ESPN+ PPV starting at 10 p.m. ET.

The main card will start with Tyson Pedro taking on Harry Hunsucker in a light heavyweight fight. #11 Marcin Tybura and #13 Alexandr Romanov will square off in a heavyweight bout, while #3 Jose Aldo faces #6 Merab Dvalishvili will meet in a bantamweight match. The co-main event will see #6 Paulo Costa taking on Luke Rockhold in a middleweight fight.

The early prelims will start at 6:00 p.m. ET with the prelims at 8:00 p.m. ET. The main card is expected to begin at 10:00 p.m. ET with the Usman-Edwards fight to close it out.

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is all set to defend his title against Leon Edwards at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday night. This will be the sixth title defense for the reigning champion, as he is coming off a successful title defence against Colby Covington in November, last year. At the same time, Edwards heads into the welterweight MMA bout after defeating Nate Diaz in his last bout in June 2021.

This will be the second time both fighters go against each other, as Kamaru picked up a win, the last time they fought in 2015. Since then, Edwards has maintained a 10-0 win-loss record and is now looking to become the first native of Jamaica to become a UFC champion. Usman currently has a win-loss-draw record of 20-1-0, while Edwards’ record stands at 19-3-0.

Meanwhile, the UFC 278 fight card also features the exciting middleweight bout between Paulo Costa and Luke Rockhold as the co-main event. Veteran fighter Jose Aldo will lock horns with Merab Dvalishvili in the bantamweight bout, while Wu Yanan is all set to go against Lucie Pudilova in the women’s bantamweight bout. The main card concludes with the Tyson Pedro vs Harry Hunsucker light heavyweight bout.

Usman (20-1) is on a 19-fight win streak, with Edwards (19-3, 1 No Contest) having already fallen to the Nigerian-American on that run. In 2015, four years before becoming champion, Usman outpointed the Briton, who has impressively responded with a nine-fight winning streak of his own to earn a title shot at long last.

Usman, 35, last competed in November, achieving a second victory over Colby Covington to retain the belt for a fifth straight successful title defence. In fact, the “Nigerian Nightmare” has not only retained the gold against Covington twice, but also against Jorge Masvidal on two occasions. Usman has claimed to be “lapping” the opposition, and a second win against Edwards would drive home that point.

Thirty-year-old Edwards, meanwhile, last fought in June 2021, surviving a late scare to outpoint Nate Diaz after dominating the fan favourite for the best part of five rounds. If the Jamaican-born, Birmingham-based fighter can overcome Usman here, he will become Britain’s second ever UFC champion.

Who wins?

It’s hard to bet against Usman. Though, his focus on what comes next rather than Edwards seems troubling. Still, Usman is the champ with his fantastic wrestling as plan B against Edwards, who may lack the power to truly hurt Usman. [Pick: Usman by unanimous decision]

In the co-main event, it’s nearly impossible to envision a scenario where Costa doesn’t knock Rockhold’s head off his shoulders. Costa is one of the hardest hitters in the middleweight division and Rockhold has lost his last two fights (and only fights in the past two and half years by brutal knockouts. [Pick: Costa by first-round KO]

Everyone keeps waiting for Jose Aldo’s career to come to an end. That appeared to be the case in 2020. But Aldo has put together a three-fight winning streak against top contenders at bantamweight. You could argue those three fighters – Rob Font, Pedro Munhoz and Marlon Vera – are better than Dvalishvili. [Pick: Aldo by unanimous decision]cfxbb
